Heralded as "richly textured" by the LA Times and deemed "frighteningly psychedelic" by the Phnom Penh Post, Los Angeles dark synth act Indradevi have unleashed their sophomore album "Idols" on Cleopatra Records, furthering their exploration of vocal-driven electronica with a distinct Southeast Asian twist.

Indradevi founders Barong and Rangda intertwine Cambodian songwriting sensibilities with a colorful palette of influences, including 1980's action movie scores, industrial rock, drum & bass, and even Indonesian gamelan music. The result is a brooding landscape of soulful synths and melodic gongs, riddled with a hint of menace. Vocalist Sophea Pel delivers soaring melodies, alternating between English and Khmer, the language of Cambodia. Indradevi's sound is heavily inspired by 1970's Cambodian pop. Most of the musicians behind this movement were killed at the hands of the Khmer Rouge during the Cambodian genocide of 1975-1979. When civil war engulfed Cambodia during the 1980's, Sophea's family fled across the border to Thailand. In a Thai refugee camp, Sophea discovered her passion for singing, and later came to the United States at the age of 10. Also lending her voice to the record is Rumany Long, another Cambodian-born songstress with a similar backstory.

Capturing the dark retro ambiance of the album, Indradevi produced a music video for the title track "Idols," wherein a supernatural plot unfolds in downtown Los Angeles. A young female martial artist receives a late night phone call, triggering a rescue mission into a shadowy demonic underworld.

"Idols" follows the band's 2013 debut album "A Thousand Tomorrows," and their 2014 EP "Wake from the Poison Dream." Indradevi co-headlined the 2014 and 2015 editions of the Cambodian Music Festival, sharing the stage with Dengue Fever and Honey Cocaine.

The band hits the road this June and July, bringing their unique visuals and sounds up and down the west coast. Stops include San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix, and many more, with support from fellow LA synth group Jak Syn.

Basically every song on this album has a structure similar to those on progressive metal albums. You never know what to expect and how the song will shift in the next few seconds. That makes listening to it very interesting. Also, this is probably my favorite sound Glitch Black has used so far. Hard to pick a favorite song though, had to decide between Starcatcher and Forever War. FLESH MECHANIC
